State Farm Grant Sponsored Earth Day Block Party at New Schools at Carver a success!

May 4, 2011

Thanks to all volunteers at event!

Thanks to the energy and hard work of the volunteers and Outward Bound Atlanta staff who came out to support the Earth Day Block Party, we were able to support community building efforts on campus, as well as to raise awareness of environmental responsibility.

Generally the four schools on the campus are separate in almost every way; with the exception of sports teams and graduation exercises, students from different schools rarely interact with each other.

At the Block Party, students from Health Sciences and Research and students from Early College worked together to provide the format for the event as well as the leadership for the activities alongside of members from 4 AmeriCorps teams.

Students from School of the Arts performed songs and provided entertainment, while students from School of Technology participated in the campus clean-up efforts, picking up trash around the school buildings.

Youth Villages Inner Harbour, Georgia State University, and Refugee Family Services AmeriCorps joined Outward Bound Atlanta's AmeriCorps team in providing support to the LEAD students in facilitating the day's activities. LEAD Club members painted faces, helped guests tie dye garments, introduced students and their parents to the concept of composting food scraps using worms, made bracelets with guests out of plastic bottles, played recycle relay and recycle bowling, welcomed guests, and organized a campus clean up service project.

Youth Villages Inner Harbour also brought student drummers who shared African drumming talents with participants at the event. Youth Villages inner Harbour provided energy and lent a sense of unity to the event.
